My family has a tradition of doing Secret Santa every Christmas, and it’s always a highlight of our Christmas Eve dinner. I usually end up getting matched with one of my four cousins, who are all boys younger than me, so that just means buying a Gamestop gift card and some t-shirts and calling it a day. But this year two of my blogger friends, Abigail and Cathleen, are hosting a blogger Secret Santa with the college blogger community! I’m so excited to buy some fun and festive gifts for the blogger I’m shopping for, and I really want them to be something that fits her style. Today I want to share some tips for finding those perfect gifts and give y’all some ideas to get your shopping list started!
Get To Know Your Giftee
Asking your giftee what their favorite things are sort of ruins the whole Secret Santa thing, so you’ll have to get creative with figuring out what they like. If possible, have the host of your Secret Santa make everyone fill out a form with a few of their favorite things, colors, and hobbies. Abigail and Cathleen put together a Google Sheets page with everyone’s name and had us all fill out ten spaces on things we love, which helped me figure out what to put down for myself and gave us all a good idea of what our giftee wants!
Check Out Your Giftee’s Social Media Profile
One of the best ways to get to know someone these days is through their social media, especially Instagram and Pinterest. I even have a public wishlist board on my Pinterest page, so whenever a family member or friend asks what I like, I can point them there! See what colors are most prominent in their feeds, what they like to do in their free time, and what their overall style is. Do they post a lot of coffee pics? Do they use journals and notepads? Do they work out a lot? These can all help you narrow down the theme of your gifts!
Use Your Spending Limit Wisely
Once you have an idea of what your giftee likes, it’s time to start shopping. For the Blogger Secret Santa I’m in, our spending limit is $20-$30. I personally think this is a perfect limit, because you’re not stuck trying to find a million things to buy, but you also have a good amount of spending room to buy some nice gifts. I would suggest dividing up your spending limit and buying a few nice gifts rather than using it all on one big thing that you hope your giftee will love. Lots of gifts are more fun to open than just one anyway! I’m planning to use my $30 buying 5-6 small but meaningful gifts, and I’m expecting one of those gifts to cost close to $10, so the rest will be centered around that main gift.
Choose Where You’re Going To Shop
Almost every blogger in my Secret Santa group said that they love Target, so that’s an obvious stop on my shopping trip. They’re the perfect place for finding quality but inexpensive gifts for small spending limits, and realistically you could find all of your gifts there! I really want to get creative with my gift though, so I’m planning to buy some things online and from local small businesses. These are some great stores for finding small gifts (some have a specific page for gifts):
If you’re needing a gift super last minute, I would definitely recommend shopping on Amazon! If you have Amazon Prime Student (you can do a free trial to get you through the holiday season), you’ll get free two-day shipping! You’d be surprised what brands you can buy on there, like Essie nail polish or Rifle Paper Co stationery.
Secret Santa Gift Ideas
If you’re struggling to get your shopping list started, these are some gift ideas I came up with for a variety of spending limits!
- Face masks – individual, personal fave
- Coffee mugs
- Nail polish – one, two, three, four
- Lush gift box
- Pins – one, two
Wrap everything up in a cute DIY bag for local parties or decorate the inside of a box for long distance giftees and send it off! If you’ve never met your giftee in person, you could even write a note introducing yourself and add your social media usernames so they can keep up with you. I’ll be doing an unwrapping post on Christmas Day showing y’all what my Secret Santa got me, so be sure to check back for the reveal!
Are you doing Secret Santa this season? If so, what are some things you’re planning to buy or would love to have?
